Hello Baby!

!
Written by Lizzy Rockwell

"In Mommy's body, a baby is growing.  Soon I will be a brother!"

A small boy feels the baby kick inside his mother's tummy, hears the baby's heartbeat at the doctor's office, and greets the baby after she is born!  He sees how she eats, sleeps and cries, and how it takes a mother, a father and a new big brother to make this baby feel at home.  With simple words and charming illustrations, Hello Baby! lets children know just what to expect when a new family member is on the way.

Illustrated with full colour cartoons. Images include a chart showing "How a Baby Grows" with two levels of text - a basic level appropriate for younger children, and more detailed for older children explaining what's happening with baby's development at different milestones - eg, 12 weeks - All body parts are now formed, including toes, fingers and eyelids; 32 weeks - Toenails and fingernails have formed.  Eyes can open and close.  Soft fuzz covers the body.  A welcome addition which is not usually included in baby books.

My New Baby

!
Board Book

This book has no text - so narrate to the pictures with your child, personalising to your own family circumstances.  Delightful illustrations show events in family life with a newborn including feeding, crying, dressing and welcoming by the extended family. It also shows interactions between an older sibling and the new baby including the older sibling entertaining the new baby with a toy, going for a walk together and helping with baby's bath time.

Our 2yo LOVED this book - he would point to the characters and identify Mum, Dad and himself as well as Grandma and Grandpa and of course the baby.  I'd often find him looking through the book in the weeks before his little brother was born.

What Baby Needs (Hard Cover)

!
Written by William Sears, M.D., Martha Sears, R. N., and Christie Watts Kelly

" A good choice for parents who take exception (understandably) to books that introduce the new-baby theme in conjunction with sibling rivalry.  Instead, the focus is on what the older child can do...and how to make friends with the baby." - Booklist

" A warm look at how life in the family changes to accommodate the needs of a newborn.  The lighthearted, full-color cartoons bring some welcome new images to baby books." - School Library Journal

Includes a preview for parents and caregivers with tips on using this text (eg modifying the text as you read to your child according to the choices you make in your family and tips to make the transition easier for an older sibling).

The text and illustrations reflect a responsive parenting style known as Attachment Parenting (this style is explained in the book).  The illustrations show involvement with the new baby from all family members including bathing the new baby, changing nappies, breastfeeding and bottlefeeding expressed milk, babywearing etc.
